Sony Xperia Z5’s soon to release predecessor, the Xperia Z4, is no longer a mystery now as most of the device’s specifications have been revealed recently thanks to leaked benchmarks. Most of those specifications are exactly identical to what we reported to you last year. Now our trusted source is back with some fresh information, this time on the Xperia Z5.

Q4 Announcement

Since Sony didn’t announce the Xperia Z4 at the Mobile World Congress this year, many expected that Sony would not be announcing a second flagship device this year since the Xperia Z4 is expected to arrive only by the middle of the year. However, that isn’t going to be the case. Sony is targeting a Q4 announcement of the Xperia Z5, along with the Xperia Z5 Ultra and the Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones. Our source did also mention that the release of these devices could be delayed to January 2016 if the Snapdragon 820 chipset is not available in time for the Z5-series release. The Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Ultra are said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset. Details about the Xperia Z5 Compact hardware are not available yet.

Fingerprint Sensor on the Xperia Z5 Ultra

One of the major highlights of the Xperia Z5 Ultra, according to our source, will be the Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology that Qualcomm announced recently. This will make the Xperia Z5 Ultra the first Sony Xperia smartphone to feature a fingerprint sensor. The Xperia Z5 will unfortunately not be equipped with a fingerprint sensor, or at least that isn’t the plan for now.

Quad HD Displays & Improved Hardware

Both the Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Ultra will come with Quad HD displays for all markets, unlike the Xperia Z4. As has been reported recently, the Xperia Z4 will feature a Quad HD display only for select markets while everyone else will be getting a 1080p display variant. Along with a Quad HD display, the Xperia Z5 and the Z5 Ultra will also sport 4GB RAM and new camera sensors. However, do not expect any major changes to the camera such as the inclusion of optical image stabilization. OIS is said to be coming to Xperia smartphones in another one or two years.

Xperia Z5 series to feature a Completely New Design

Sony has been using the Omni-Balance design for its flagship smartphones for almost five generations now. Fortunately, the Xperia Z4 is said to be the last Sony Xperia flagship smartphone to feature this design language. Our source says the Xperia Z5 will feature an all-new design, bearing very little in common with the Xperia Z4 and previous Z series flagship smartphones from Sony.

  • The Z4 is already dead in the water and obsolete with the Z5 coming out right behind it. Who would buy the Z4 now? It would be a waste of money to buy the Z4 now. So SONY needs to stop this every-six-months nonsense and bring out something really new and innovative on a once-a-year schedule. Stop doing the same-old same-old every six months. As for the Z5...they need to start teasing now with a good advertising campaign, then when it hits the streets they need to advertise it everywhere, price it to sell, place it with all major retailers, and support it with good customer service. SONY is very weak in all of these areas. Also, how about some new colors, like charcoal gray and silver? A fingerprint sensor on all new Z=phones and OIS are pretty standard now on most new flagships that SONY competes with, so get with it SONY. Lead, follow, or get out of the way! I would not buy the Z4 now that we all know the Z5 is coming out right behind it. Frankly, I think SONY should just forget the Z4. They have already shot themselves in the foot by bringing out he Z5 so close behind it.
