Sony’s latest flagship, the Xperia Z3, has just started arriving in markets across the world, but Sony is busy preparing its next flagship device, aka the Xperia Z4, for 2015. Our trusted sources have shared some interesting bits of information about Sony’s next flagship device scheduled to arrive early next year.
Sony Xperia Z3X Doesn’t Exist
There have been rumors about the Xperia Z3X floating around the web in the recent past, and according to our sources, the Z3X doesn’t really exist. Instead, Sony is working on the Xperia Z4 that it’s set to debut in March next year, probably at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
No more bi-annual flagship releases
What’s more interesting is that the Xperia Z4 will be the only flagship device from Sony for 2015. The Japanese company is reportedly dropping the idea of bi-annual flagships it adopted from last year with the Xperia Z and Z1. A major reason could be the fact that flagship devices have reached a sort of saturation point and there aren’t any huge advancements that can be made in a six-month period. The upgrade from Xperia Z2 to Xperia Z3 this year was quite marginal and the only changes were related to software and hardware optimization.
Sony Xperia Z4 Specs: 4GB RAM, Exmor RS CMOS Sensor, 32GB storage
Moving on to the specifications of the Z4, the device is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core 64-bit chipset clocked at 2.8GHz, and the all-new Adreno 430 GPU. The 16GB internal storage that’s been the norm on Xperia flagships, right from Xperia T to the recent Z3, will finally be upgraded to 32GB. The RAM is reportedly going to be 4GB. It will also be the first Xperia smartphone to come with LTE Cat.6 connectivity and Bluetooth 4.1. The camera will finally be upgraded from the IMX220 20.7MP sensor Sony has been using since the Z1. The Z4 will utilize a curved Exmor RS CMOS sensor with a similar resolution as the previous three Z-series flagships.
Xperia Z4’s Design & Display
The next bit of information could be disappointing for a lot of you. Our source claims the Z4 will feature the same omni-balance design language and be very similar to the Xperia Z3 in terms of appearance. The display will see a good upgrade though, both in size and resolution. The Z4 is said to come with a 5.5-inch display with a Quad-HD 2560 x 1440 resolution. Our source also claims there will be a dedicated amp on the Z4, with a strong stress on audio quality.
It appears that Sony might finally deliver on what many Android users crave. What do you think of the leak? Does the Z4 sound exciting enough?
P.S. – This leak comes from the same source who leaked the Xperia Z3 Compact, and it was spot on. We’re expecting the same for this leak.

Arjit, does your insider say anything about a phablet or Z Ultra successor?
I think a 5.5″ screen is too big for a smartphone. Into Phablet territory now.
“No more bi-annual flagship releases”
Probably the best call. Not without risks of course but at least better spent focus to get leaner and meaner faster. Sony are doing the cut off very well compared to Samsung. The Chinese are rising hard, fast and relentless they’ll take the midrange and downwards no prisoners asked and for the next couple of years so will the Indian OEMs lifted by Android One’s program. Once the 2 regional players get their A game as well they’re gonna come head on into flagship territory anyways.
“Sony Xperia Z4 Specs: 4GB RAM, Exmor RS CMOS Sensor, 32GB storage”
Not much to complain save for 4GB RAM seems rather optimistic unless Sony really does have an LPDDR4 plan that works who knows they just might. Clock speed to me are rather excessive considering Lollipop look set to achieve better efficiency rate with the new ART and a bit of an unnecessary higher notch for Sony to improve on Z3’s much acclaimed power management. We’ll see how SD810 will affect that aspect sooner or later.
“Xperia Z4’s Design & Display”
I’m just gonna say it imho…. QHD for sub 10″ screens are pointless and just a marketing fad. This is the problem when display ODMs arrive to a pre-determined low cost parity at certain levels and want to shove that onto the market, needs vs. wants vs. batt life expectancy be damned. FHD are more than enough to bring that balanced compromise. If anything this is just one mechanism for RRP control and nothing else.
Any word on whether there will be a Z4 Compact? Not sure if I should hold off on buying the Z3C if there is going to be an upgrade early next year…
Any indication on the leak of whether the display will be OLED as was reported for the Z3X?
No details about that yet, as it’s still quite early. But we’re expecting new details to popup within the next few weeks.
Loving the sound of the Z4. 32GB is a must, the Exmoor sensor is terrific, I just hope there is some image stabilisation. Like the sound of the audio. I must admit I love the Walkman app, its gorgeous. If Sony put some real effort into their Unlimited Music App, I would give up Spotify. Size is not too much of an issue for me.
