We brought you the first info on Sony’s upcoming Xperia Z4 flagship last month, and this month we brought to you some exclusive news about the Xperia Z4 Ultra, Z4 Tablet, and the Z4 Compact. Our trusted source is back with some more information on the Xperia Z4 lineup, and we simply couldn’t resist sharing the latest updates with you.
Sony to continue with 3GB RAM
Remember we told you that the Xperia Z4 would be coming with 4GB RAM? Well, it now seems like Sony has decided to continue with 3GB RAM on the production units. Perhaps Sony found 4GB RAM to be too much on the Z4 prototypes, and decided it was better saving costs instead of spending higher on a component that wouldn’t really provide any benefits to the consumer.
S-Master HX Digital Amplifier
Our source has also provided some new information on the dedicated amp that we had talked about in our first Xperia Z4 leak article. Apparently the amp is going to be the S-Master HX digital amplifier that is seen on Sony’s Walkman audio players. This would be the first time that Sony would use a high-end dedicated audio chip on its Xperia smartphone range. Samsung and Apple have been using high-end Wolfson and Cirrus Logic DACs on their flagship smartphones for the past few years though. Sony Walkman devices are famed for their fantastic audio quality, so the Xperia Z4 could end up as one the best sounding smartphones ever.
IMX230 dropped for IMX220
Sony announced the IMX230 Exmor RS 1/2.4” type sensor recently, and many of you might be expecting to see Sony use that sensor on the Xperia Z4. However, according to our source, that is not going to happen. The recently announced sensor will not be going into mass production soon enough to be used on the Xperia Z4. Instead, Sony is sticking with the 1/2.3″ IMX220 sensor that it has been using since the Xperia Z1. But since the sensors used on the Xperia Z4 will be more recent, they will be slightly superior to the older ones. The new image processing algorithm is being handled by Sony’s imaging division to extract the best performance possible from the sensor.
Launch Time Frame
There were some reports published recently that claimed Sony would be using the Snapdragon 805 on the Xperia Z4. Our source claims that this will not be the case, nor will we see the Z4 launch at CES. The Xperia Z4 will roll out globally by the end of March, after its announcement at MWC. The entire Xperia Z4 family of devices, the Xperia Z4, Xperia Z4 Ultra, Xperia Z4 Tablet, and Xperia Z4 Compact, will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, but due to supply constraints from Qualcomm, the devices will not be available in large numbers initially. So we could expect a situation similar to the Xperia Z2. The Xperia Z2 was also delayed this year in many markets and was in short supply for a long period of time.
