The year 2016 saw very good smartphones from both Samsung and LG. While the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge made Samsung very popular among people looking to buy a premium Android smartphone, the Note 7 was a huge embarrassment for Samsung. LG released its ‘modular’ smartphone in 2016, the G5. LG was appreciated by tech-enthusiasts for stepping towards the future.

The past flagships from Samsung and LG were poles apart when it comes to popularity. While S7/S7 Edge became immensely popular, the LG G5 and LG V20 were not received well by the consumers.

Both companies are expected to release epic smartphones in 2017 – and there are multiple rumors surrounding their release. While Samsung is expected to build on the success of Galaxy S7/S7 Edge with the Galaxy S8, LG is expected to ditch the G5 Modular Design, and go ahead with a single unit, metal frame LG G6.

In this article, we take a look at everything that we can expect from LG and Samsung for their upcoming smartphones. Based on what is rumored at the moment, we will also discuss which flagship is shaping up to be the better. For more information, check our round up of both the smartphones: LG G6 and Galaxy S8.

Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 — Design

In this regard, LG is the one that needs to do a bit of homework. Samsung has the perfect design in their hands at the moment. Galaxy S7/S7 Edge with their metal-glass combination design were the most beautiful looking smartphones in the past year.

On the other end of the spectrum, LG G5 did not look anything special – and the hideous implementation of modular design made it even worse.

Samsung will build on the design success it received with Galaxy S7/S7 Edge. Galaxy S8 will feature an almost bezel less display. Galaxy S8 will also not have a dedicated home button or fingerprint sensor. Both of them are rumored to be implemented in the home screen.

LG G6 is expected to have a similar overall design. LG G6 will feature a metal unibody, with protective features such as water and dust resistance. The bezels will be significantly reduced as well.

Although both Galaxy S8 and LG G6 are expected to feature an amazing design, Samsung is likely to come out with a better-looking phone. Galaxy S7 Edge looked exceedingly pretty, and Galaxy S8 will likely surpass it.

Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 — Display

The LG G6 will feature a 5.7in display, Quad-HD in resolution. LG’s teaser video has made it clear that LG G6 will feature a bigger display, with the size of the bezels reduced. Further, the display will have rounded edges, thus giving the phone a neater look.

LG G6 will be the first smartphone to feature a 18:9 aspect ratio screen. The resolution is slightly above Quad-HD, to be precise. The resolution of the screen will be 2880 x 1440.

Samsung Galaxy S8 will come with a bigger screen and smaller bezels. The phone will not be bigger itself. A bigger screen will be incorporated in the same footprint – which is absolutely amazing. The company is expected to improve on its always-on display tech with the Galaxy S8.

The screen that will feature in the Galaxy S8 will be an enhanced version of the Super AMOLED display that was used in the Galaxy S7 Edge. The screen will be more battery efficient and will cover a wider color gamut.

Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 — Two variants on the horizon?

Samsung is expected to release two phones, which will vary in only display sizes. The smaller screen will stand at 5.7in and the bigger one will be 6.2in. However, the phones will have the same footprint as their predecessors. This will be the result of the bezel-less design that Samsung will debut with the Galaxy S8.

Unlike the S7, both the variants of Galaxy S8 will have a curved screen. Samsung is working towards making curved screen phones the identity of the company.

Both Galaxy S8 and LG G6 are rumored to come with Quad-HD resolution, although some reports point out the Galaxy S8 could have a 4k enabled screen.

Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 — The Specs Sheet

All the flagship phones of a particular year come with almost same specs. Expect the specs of both Galaxy S8 and LG G6 to be identical.

  • Galaxy S8 will come in two screen sizes: 5.7in and 6.2in. LG G6 will have only one variant with a 5.7in screen.
  • Both Galaxy S8 and LG G6 will feature Snapdragon 835.

Galaxy S8 vs LG G6 — Camera

Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge had one of the best camera modules on the market when the debuted. Samsung is expected to continue that tradition when they debut the Galaxy S8. Expect a 16MP (or 12MP) rear sensor with bigger pixels and a better aperture to capture more light. The lens setup could involve two lenses.

The front camera will be 8MP, along with a numerous new features that have trickled down from the primary camera.

LG G6 is also expected to debut with a dual lens setup. One will the primary sensor, while the other one could be zoom lens, or a wide angle lens. Do note that at this point, a wide angle lens seems more likely in the LG G6. This will give the users multiple options when it comes to professional photography.
