Apple recently came out with a new set of Bluetooth headphones: the AirPods. AirPods give you the same comfortable fit of the EarPods, now coupled with no wires. AirPods will definitely not blow you away with their sound quality or noise isolation. However, they come with a number of advantages that make them the one of the best set of all-around portable headphones.

Today, we will review the Apple AirPods. We have been using the Apple AirPods with essentially all Apple devices, such as iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Pro and MacBook Pro.

Pairing AirPods with iPhone, iPad and MacBook

To start with, AirPods are simply brilliant when it comes to pairing. All you have to do is pop up the case, and you will instantly see a pairing prompt on the iPhone, iPad or MacBook that you are using. The pairing is so easy because of the presence of Apple’s W1 chip inside the AirPods.

Another amazing ability that this W1 chip gives the Apple AirPods is to quickly switch between various paired devices. If you have been using your AirPods with your MacBook, and now want to listen to Spotify on your iPhone, all you have to do is select the output to AirPods in the Control Center of your iPhone.

Switching between devices

With just one tap, your AirPods will be able to switch the audio input from your MacBook Pro to your iPhone. There are numerous Bluetooth headphones on the market, but not many which can switch with this degree of ease.

Using just one of the AirPods

Apple AirPods can also be used one at a time. This is a feature that is much underappreciated, but is simply brilliant. You can use your AirPods in a single ear if you like. This will free up your other ear so that you can listen to the outside environment as well.

This could be useful in plenty of situations, especially when you are just taking a walk around the block to buy something, and listening to an audiobook at the same time. Furthermore, this feature will completely replace your Bluetooth headset if you use that to take calls during your commute.

Sound quality of AirPods

Phone calls and FaceTime calls essentially sound the same on the AirPods. As far as media consumption goes, AirPods do a decent job. You can easily enjoy all your music and watch movies – the AirPods will guarantee a superb sound quality.

However, the sound quality will not blow you away by any means. The sound is balanced, with no indication of preference to any frequency. They do get loud, which is very good for noisy environments. If you are an audiophile and want something with marvelous sound quality, the AirPods are clearly not for you.

Connectivity and range

AirPods offer unparalleled connectivity. You can easily walk across the room without losing the Bluetooth connection with your phone. Moving around does not seem to affect the sound quality or the music playing.

Battery Life

Apple claims that the battery life of AirPods is about five hours on a single charge. This is decent, but there is surprise. The case for the AirPods doubles up as a charging pod. Every time you put in your AirPods into the case, they will be charged.

With the charging case, you get an additional 22 hours of battery life on your AirPods. The AirPods charge very fast. If you are In hurry, you can plug in the AirPods for fifteen minutes, and you will get a charge that will last 2-3 hours.

Will the AirPods fit me?

With the EarPods, Apple went with ‘one size fits all’ philosophy. We know of a lot of users who hate EarPods simply because they won’t fit in their ears. If you have a similar story, AirPods won’t do you any good either.

If EarPods fit your ears perfectly and let you run, jump and walk around with them, then it is almost certain that AirPods will give you a similar experience. AirPods are essentially wireless EarPods. The shape of the bud is almost identical, and so, how it fits your ear will also be the same.

Siri voice commands on AirPods

AirPods come with sensors that can detect proximity and touch. Proximity sensor allows the AirPods to know when they are inside the ear, and when they are not. If you have been listening to music with both AirPods, and you remove one of them, the music will be paused automatically.

Similarly, if you remove both the AirPods, the Music App you are using will be closed. You can also tap on the side of either earpiece of AirPods to launch Siri. You will have use Siri to skip tracks or make changes to the volume.

If you are going out somewhere where there will be no internet connectivity, you will have to use your phone to make those changes. You can also use Siri directly from AirPods to give voice commands. This will enable you to easily make voice calls and type out text messages.
